Generally, standard black phosphate drywall screws are not recommended for outdoor use. They are susceptible to rust when exposed to moisture. For outdoor applications, specialized exterior wood screws or coated fasteners are recommended.

For installing standard 1/2-inch drywall onto wood framing, 1-1/4 inch screws are typically used. This size provides sufficient penetration into the studs without risking damage to hidden utilities.
